There has been a lot of back and forth regarding the highly anticipated Aaliyah biopic over the years. But things have been pretty quiet since Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, took to Facebook to shut down talk of the biopic back in 2012. However, nearly two years have passed since then and according to the late singer’s uncle and former manager Barry Hankerson, the biopic is definitely still happening. Back in December, Barry debuted a movie poster for the film on Twitter and from the looks of it, it’s slated to premiere on VH1 August 25, 2014.
“Merry Christmas #TeamAaliyah #VH1 “One in a million” The Aaliyah Story @VH1 sneak peek! Merry Christmas enjoy #2014,” he tweeted.
And in more recent news, it appears that producers have been busy at work trying to find the best actress to cast in the starring role. While it’s unclear who has been selected, actress Tristin Mays revealed that she was one of the lucky ladies in the running for the coveted role.
“Normally I wouldn’t do something like this,” Tristin expressed in an Instagram post last week. “But a very close friend of mine, @loganlaurice, gave me the courage to speak up about something that’s been pending and sitting on my heart. Today, I can’t be upset that I didn’t book the role I worked so hard for. This may have been the most difficult, emotional, inspiring, and lengthy audition process I’ve ever experienced. Getting the chance to portray someone I’ve always loved and admired so much was a blessing every single step of the way. I invested every ounce of my body mind and soul into this process and I can honestly say I’m proud of myself. God definitely has something incredible in store for me. A huge thank you to everyone who believed in me and spoke up for me in the room. And a huge congratulations to everyone in the cast!#TheAaliyahStory. Like Logan said, you’re satisfied no matter the outcome of things that aren’t in your control. -Tristin Mays”

So far, no official announcements have been made by VH1, but if the Aaliyah biopic is anything like TLC’s, then we’re totally here for it!
